What is surrogacy?
In surrogacy IVF is done to create embryos from the egg and sperm of the respective couple.The resulting embryo is transferred in to a 3rd person to achieve a pregnancy, she is called a surrogate mother.
How it is done ?
Surrogacy is done through IVF.Egg collection is done after stimulating the female partner and embryo is made using her husband semen sample.The resulting embryo is transferred to surrogate mother, who is already prepared and synchronised with the wife.In some cases , donor egg and husband sperm is used.

What are the criteria for surrogate mother?
Surrogate mother should be married and she must have atleast one normal child.Her age should not be above 35 and must be healthy.Medical tests including screening tests for CBC, LFT, RFT , HIV, HBSAg, HCV, VDRL etc should be satisfactory.She should not use drugs, alcohol or tobacco products and have no bad habits.Her BMI should be less than 30.She should take legal consent from husband if he is alive and he should also undergo screening test.
Surrogate mother can be from anywhere, usually we choose from Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu etc .They should be willing to stay in hospital, when ever required.Some of them stay through out the pregnancy in hospital.
What are the legal procedures for surrogacy?
At GIFT IVF centre,we have local and international legal experts to deal with the legal matters of surrogacy.Both the biological parents needs to sign on the consent form after counseling.Guardian has to be allotted, so that somebody will be there to take over the baby, in case of unforeseen circumstances like accident to parents or separation.
Foreign nationals need to get surrogacy visa(Medical visa)from their country, before starting treatment.
